Located at the North end of the main terminal, Concourse D Hardstand Holdroom is an expansion to the main terminal designed to help accommodate the record passenger levels SeaTac airport has been receiving. Due to the immediate need for more passenger gates, the Port of Seattle and Walsh Construction had an accelerated project schedule that needed to be adhered to.
To meet the stringent timeline, Mission Glass strategized with Walsh Construction and decided to pre-glaze the entire curtain wall system. This approach allowed large curtain wall segments, some of which were 8’ x 21’, to be pre-glazed in the controlled environment of our fabrication facility in Tumwater, WA and transported to site. From there, specialized equipment was used to hoist these large panels into place and anchored to the primary structure. Pre-glazing these panels ensured the field installation time was minimized and the building could be enclosed and protected from the exterior elements more quickly than traditional methods of installation.
The other main scope of work for Mission Glass occurred on the interior of the building. This included a 250-foot-long run of ultra-clear low iron all glass guardrail at the ADA ramp and a stainless-steel handrail with custom LED lights integrated at the main stairwell.
The unique geometry of the articulating roof structure, and the angular footprint provided unique challenges, especially for a pre-glazed curtain wall. In the end, careful planning, coordination, and installation by our expert field crews allowed for successful project delivery under a tight deadline.
Some of the main products used on this project were: 1600 Screw Spline Curtain Wall (Kawneer), insulating laminated glazing (Viracon’s VRE1-54), Pre-finished insulated wall panels (Mapes R+), all glass guardrail and handrail (C.R. Laurence), and Starphire Ultra-Clear Low Iron glass (Vitro) fabricated by Northwestern Industries.
