Surprise Lake Middle School was a shift in typical construction delivery, as the coordination efforts all shifted to remote work during the COVID-19 pandemic. While not a new concept in construction, the push to go fully remote brought many construction activities that were previously still done in large office trailers into the 21st Century and showed that resources from across the country (or globe) could come together to deliver construction projects successfully. The school itself is designed with projecting halls oriented in many directions to allow for expansive views and daylighting throughout the building's interior spaces. A mixture of glazing, metal wall panels and brick façade elements create a balance of both finishes and textures that will stand the test of time. The building's main entries also had a vibrant yellow finish surrounding them to accentuate the core of the structure.

Mission Glass was tasked with providing storefront and curtain wall systems throughout the building, which incorporated operable windows as well as horizontal and vertical sunshades to help cut down on solar heat gain and glare that occurs during the warm Northwest summers. The sunshades, along with high performing Low-Emissivity (Low-E) coatings on the glazing helped to drastically improve the thermal efficiency of the building façade, while also providing a clean design element, accentuating the exterior elevations. Surprise Lake Middle School was a great addition to Mission Glass' repertoire of growing educational projects and one that will stand for generations of new students that will navigate its halls.
