The White Center Library originally opened its doors in 1976 just at the northern edge of Burien’s city limits. This outdated structure is slated to be completely replaced, as well as, relocated in the unincorporated area of the city. The new facility will be nearly 10,000 square feet of open floor space designed to use natural lighting elements and oriented in such a way to take advantage of the sun’s natural heat. There will be large glazing expanses at the North elevation that will allow an abundance of natural light, without excessive heat gain that is typical from direct sunlight. The smaller openings on the South will protect the building from the summer sun, and reduce the overall heating and cooling loads within the building.
